Understand Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety in dogs is one of the most debilitating and isolating behavioural challenges to deal with.

I know, because I’ve been there - I grew up with a dog who had separation anxiety and we received damaging and unethical advice from a trainer.

Prevention is key if your dog is new to you, or showing early signs. It almost always gets worse if ignored.

What is Separation Anxiety?

Separation anxiety is fear-based, and not something your dog can help without your support. It means they feel scared, worried or lonely when you leave them.

Common signs include:

  • Pacing, panting, or whining as you prepare to leave

  • Barking, howling or crying when alone

  • Destructive behaviour near doors or windows

  • Toileting indoors only when left

  • Drooling, trembling or excessive licking

  • Escaping or attempting to escape

Separation anxiety often starts small, and escalates quickly.

What are Early Signs of Separation Anxiety in Dogs?

Often, the very earliest symptoms of separation anxiety in your dog appear sweet or endearing - maybe they are running to greet you, or bringing you a toy to show you.

On their own, these signs don’t mean anything drastic, but a pattern of behaviours can become important over time.

How Can You Help Your Dog Today?

Separation anxiety in dogs often starts small, and we many not realise it’s happening until we are told by our neighbours that our dog howls all day, or we get home and find the sofa cushions have been destroyed.

At this stage, it’s incredibly overwhelming because you haven’t planned for this - you can’t just stay at home now you know your dog has separation worries.

That’s why early identification and intervention is key.

If you’re already overwhelmed though, you’ve come to the right place.

I pride myself on offering affordable and effective support through my Dog Club, where you can find my Separation Anxiety Course.
